All about The Nobel Prize

  • The Nobel Prize is a prestigious award given to recognize scientific discoveries and contributions to culture.
  • These awards are presented by Swedish and Norwegian committees.
  • Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Economics, and Peace.
  • The Nobel Prize was established by Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel, who left most of his fortune to establish this award.
  • Recipients of the Nobel Prize receive a 24-carat gold-plated green-gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary award.
  • As of 2023, the monetary prize was 11,000,000 Kr, approximately equal to USD 1,035,000.
  • Nobel Prize recipients are referred to as "Laureates."
  • A single award cannot be shared among more than three individuals, though the Peace Prize can be awarded to more than three organizations.
  • Nobel Prizes are not awarded posthumously, but if a recipient dies after being announced as a winner, the prize is still presented.
  • Since its inception in 1901 and the introduction of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1969, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded 609 times to 975 individuals and 25 organizations. Five individuals and two organizations have received the Nobel Prize more than once.
  • The Nobel Foundation, established on June 29, 1900, as a private organization, manages the finances and administration of the Nobel Prizes.
  • Four institutions are responsible for awarding six prizes:
    1. Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences – Chemistry, Physics, Economics
    2. Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute – Physiology/Medicine
    3. Swedish Academy – Literature
    4. Norwegian Nobel Committee – Peace
  • Except for the Peace Prize, Nobel Prizes are awarded annually on December 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, on Alfred Nobel's death anniversary. The Peace Prize is awarded on the same day in Oslo, Norway.
First Nobel Prizes (1901)
  1. Physics: Wilhelm Röntgen (German mechanical engineer and physicist) received the first Nobel Prize for his discovery of X-rays.
  2. Chemistry: Jacobus H. van 't Hoff was honored for his contributions to chemical thermodynamics.
  3. Literature: Sully Prudhomme was recognized for his poetic composition.
  4. Peace Prize: Jointly awarded to Frenchman Frédéric Passy and Swiss Jean Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
  5. Physiology or Medicine: Emil von Behring was awarded for his work on serum therapy, particularly its application against diphtheria.
Nobel Prizes 2024
  1. Physics:
    • Recipients: John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton
    • Achievement: Foundational discoveries and inventions advancing machine learning using artificial neural networks.
  2. Chemistry:
    • Recipients: David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper
    • Achievement: Computational protein design (David Baker) and protein structure prediction (Demis Hassabis and John Jumper).
  3. Physiology or Medicine:
    • Recipients: Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun
    • Achievement: Discovery of microRNAs and their role in gene regulation.
  4. Literature:
    • Recipient: Han Kang
    • Achievement: Profound poetic prose addressing historical traumas and the fragility of human life.
  5. Peace Prize:
    • Recipient: Nihon Hidankyo
    • Achievement: Efforts toward a nuclear-weapon-free world and highlighting the devastating impacts of nuclear weapons.
  6. Economics:
    • Recipients: Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson
    • Achievement: Research on the role of institutions in shaping prosperity, explaining why some countries fail to develop despite years of progress.
