SHYAM BENEGAL

Renowned filmmaker and director Shyam Benegal passed away on December 23, 2024, at a hospital in Mumbai.
Benegal had been suffering from kidney-related ailments for a long time.
He is survived by his wife, Neera Benegal, and daughter, Pia.
Benegal celebrated his 90th birthday with fellow artists on December 14, 2024.
Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Shyam Benegal’s father, Sridhar Benegal, was a photographer from Karnataka.
At the age of 12, Benegal made his first film using a camera gifted by his father.
In 1962, he created his first documentary film, Gher Baitha Ganga (The Ganga at the Doorstep), in Gujarati.
His last film was Mujib: The Making of a Nation in 2023.
In 2014, he created the series Samvidhaan: The Making of the Constitution of India.
Benegal received 18 National Film Awards, one Filmfare Award, and one Nandi Award, among other accolades.
He was honored with five National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi and received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinematic honor, in 2005.
He was conferred with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
Some of his notable films include Ankur, Manthan, Bhumika, Trikal, Zubeidaa, Mandi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, and Well Done Abba.
In 1988, he wrote and directed the acclaimed television series Bharat Ek Khoj, based on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s book The Discovery of India.
His films explored deep societal issues and gave Indian cinema new dimensions.
Often regarded as a pioneer of parallel cinema, he is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of the post-1970s era.
Benegal won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times.
He earned a Master's degree in Economics from Osmania University in Hyderabad, where he also established the Hyderabad Film Society.
Shyam Benegal was a second cousin of film director and actor Guru Dutt, as their grandmothers were sisters.
